I learned that with advancing age and its health challenges the most important thing for me is to immerse myself in things that are both fun and meaningful to me. This enables me to focus on the positive and treat my health condition as a nuisance I have to live with. Since the beginning of my illness I continued with activities I always enjoyed, but I make sure ‘they come to me’ as my mobility has become impaired. The Internet is an enormous resource in this regard as it helps create a virtual, new world. This enables you to enjoy things you always did and to spend many happy hours away from the burden your health condition may impose. My program also makes things easier for my family and friends, especially for my wife of almost 50 years. It is strongly endorsed by my medical providers.
Examples of my personal program are:
1. Photo Book Development
My son asked me a while ago if I could create a document that would tell my grandchildren more about the background and history of ‘Opa.’ I spent many wonderful hours completing it. The book is a great success and the comment I hear most often is ‘I wished I had done something like this.’ My book is a commemoration of ‘My Happy Life,’ but my approach lends itself to any other subject like military career, church events, science, etc.
2. Development of Your Own Video Channel
I am an opera fan and created my own opera Video Channel on YouTube. It offers almost 200 full-length operas that can be played via my computer on my TV for better viewing and sound. I watch my Opera Channel almost daily and maintain it. I have about 200 ardent opera followers, and we meet online or via phone conference. So many happy hours! Again, my approach lends itself to any kind of hobby from military history to sports, fly fishing, travel, etc.
3. Earning Some Money
Together with my partner, Rodney Brace, CEO of Hyphen-Tech, we are developing and promoting innovative online video communication services. We are always looking for partners, users, and sales reps. I found that the best way to battle a sense ‘worthlessness’ that comes with the inability to function normally, is work that 'I Can Handle.' There is nothing better than to see some checks come in, no matter how small!
4. Physical Fitness
I have always been involved in sports and still stick to a carefully
developed physical fitness routine. It makes me feel better. My biggest reward is being able to rake leaves in the fall and shovel snow in the winter!
